The Daviess County Public Schools district has been selected to participate in the Executive Leadership Program for Educators at Harvard University. This program, in association with The Wallace Foundation, will involve faculty members from three of Harvard’s graduate schools – education, business and government – and will focus on building knowledge and skills of the DCPS team in three essential elements of leadership: Systemic thinking and alignment; adaptive leadership and team building; and leadership for instructional improvement.
A team representing DCPS will travel to Harvard this summer to establish the groundwork for this four-year partnership. However, DCPS Superintendent Tom Shelton said, “Every member of the DCPS team, including our administrators; faculty and staff; Board of Education; parents, students and our entire community will have a role in the implementation of the process that we are developing with the support of the Harvard program.
“The Executive Leadership Program for Educators is not designed to give us a ‘recipe for success,’ ” Shelton continued. “It is more accurate to say it will enhance our skills as ‘chefs’ as we continue to develop our mission and vision for educating the students of the Daviess County Public Schools district.”
The DCPS district, which has earned state and national recognition for innovations in education and the academic success of students, was selected for participation in this program after a rigorous application and assessment process, which included an evaluation visit by members of the Harvard University faculty.
DCPS team members who will attend the Harvard Summer Institute are:
- Mary Tim Griffin, chairman, Board of Education
- Tom Shelton, DCPS superintendent
- Julie T. Clark, director of secondary education
- Vicki Riley, director of elementary education
- Jana Beth Slibeck Francis, director of assessment, research and curriculum
- Matthew Constant, principal of Daviess County High School
- Mark Owens, principal of Burns Middle School
- Julie Hawkins, principal, East View Elementary School
